Why a 1 cup coffee maker?

As the name implies, 1 cup coffee makers brew a single serving of coffee at a time. Typically they yield between 8 oz and 15 oz, and the coffee is brewed directly into the coffee mug.

They are great for singles not wanting or needing to brew an entire pot of coffee, and also for anyone that travels and wants to bring along their favorite coffee with them.

Because they are only brewing a single cup, these coffee makers brew quickly. You can have a fresh, piping hot cup of coffee in typically less than 30 seconds.

A 1 cup coffee maker is less expensive than a larger model, so if you do not need a lot of coffee in a single brew the cheaper price might be a strong consideration for you.

Generally these models come with less bells and whistles than their larger counterparts. However, there are models that come with many of the features we are accustomed to in the 10 cup machines.

The Cuisinart SS-1 for example has controls for Pod of Ground coffee, regular or bold strength, a cleaning function, and the ability to vary the cup size. The more features the higher the expected cost.

In contrast, the Black and Decker Brew ‘N Go™ single cups system only has an on/off switch and an indicator light to let you know the machine is on. The Cuisinart retails for approximately $240 while the Black and Decker retails for $24.

One of the nicest features with many of the single serve machines are the ability to toss them into the dishwasher…many of them are dishwasher safe. Read the product manual carefully to ensure this is an option for your model, doing so could create permanent damage to your machine…and maybe your dishwasher.
